Mag Mile Company Turns Lobby into Art Gallery
Recession Forges New Partnerships for Exhibiting Art
Chicago artist John Grantner will be displaying his abstract photography in the lobby of commercial video post-production company The Colonie, in an unusual partnership between a Magnificent Mile company and a private artist.
Many companies buy art in bulk, hang it and then forget about it. The Colonie is actively seeking out unrecognized and cutting-edge artists for regular exhibits that will turn the company’s lobby into a public art gallery.
“We want to do something for the art community—artists and patrons,” said Brian Sepanik, a Colonie partner and veteran commercial editor. “Frankly, we also want to do it for ourselves: We love having great, new art in our work space.”
The Colonie’s innovative sponsorship has already led to artistic success. Last year, artist Bill Stone sold several paintings during his art opening and is currently in negotiations to showcase his work in Italy after a passerby saw his paintings at the Colonie.
The recession has crippled America’s art market and emerging and mid-career artists, already having trouble getting into establishment galleries, are finding it tougher than ever to get eyeballs on their work. Partnerships like the one offered by the Colonie are “a win-win,” Sepanik said.
“It’s like nothing I’ve ever done,” Grantner said. “The space is perfect for a show—gorgeous, airy and well-lit. I’ve displayed in galleries since the 1980s, but I don’t feel like I’ve ever had partners who were so committed not just to my work, but to art in general.”
Grantner’s work will be on display from December until March.
